Ahmad informed us; Abu Bakr narrated to us:
49 – ʿAbbās ibn Hishām related to me, from his father, who said: Maqīs ibn Ṣubābah once drank wine in the pre-Islamic period. He became so drunk that he began drawing lines on the ground with his own urine while repeating, “An ostrich, or a camel!” When he sobered up and was told what he had done, he declared wine forbidden to himself and composed the following verses:
[al-Baḥr al-Wāfir]
I deemed the wine a pleasant, mellow draught,
Yet every trait it bears is foul and base.
So, by Allah, never through my span of life—
So long as stars arise—shall I drink wine.
If ever fair Mulaykah claim my heart
And I align with her, cares join with me.
I shall renounce the cup and, with it, all
Delights besides, whatever form they take.

Mulaykah had been a prostitute who used to visit him; he therefore gave her up—and gave up wine as well.
50 – He also said: Al-Aslum al-Yāmī, in the Age of Ignorance, forbad himself both wine and fornication, and he declared:
[al-Baḥr al-Kāmil]
I made my peace with kin after long strife—
For peace best safeguards and directs all things.
I left the wine-cup, though it once was cherished,
And left the courtesans; to leave is nobler.
In honoured self-restraint I shunned it, Umaym;
So acts the man of sense who guards his chastity.
