Ahmad informed us:
44 – Abu al-Nuʿmān Bakr narrated to us; Ahmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Ayyūb narrated to us; he said: Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿd narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, that ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb—may Allah be pleased with him—appointed al-Nuʿmān ibn ʿAdī ibn Naḍla over Maysān, a district of Basra. While there, al-Nuʿmān recited the following verses (in the Ṭawīl metre):
Has the fair lady heard that her husband now resides
In Maysān, served wine in glass and ḥantam (earthen) jars?
Whenever I wish, the village landlords sing for me,
And a dancing girl keeps time to every measured beat.
If you would drink with me, then pour from the larger cup;
Do not serve me from the smaller, jagged rim.
Perhaps the Commander of the Believers will be displeased
At our carousing within the crumbling pavilion. ⦗70⦘
When these lines reached ʿUmar he said, “Yes, by Allah, that does displease me! Whoever meets him, let him tell him that I have dismissed him.” And so ʿUmar dismissed him. When al-Nuʿmān returned, he offered an excuse, saying, “By Allah, O Commander of the Believers, I did none of what has reached you. I am merely a poet; some lines came to mind and I voiced them.” ʿUmar replied, “By Allah, as long as I live you will hold no post for me.” And he removed him from office.
