43 – ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ṣāliḥ told me: ʿUmar ibn Maʿrūf the tutor narrated to us, from Layth ibn Saʿd, from Khālid ibn Yazīd, from Saʿīd ibn Abī Hilāl, from Zayd ibn Aslam, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ once flogged a man for drinking wine. After the punishment the man said:
“Convey to the Messenger of Allah that I—
In truth—have neither stolen nor fornicated.
I drank a single draught that left no honor intact,
And tasted from it not the least delight.”
It is reported that the Prophet ﷺ remarked, “Had those words reached me before I flogged him, I would not have flogged him.”
