Ahmad informed us.

42 – Abu Bakr narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Ishaq al-Bahili narrated to us; he said: Saʿid ibn Salim al-Qaddah narrated to us, from Maʿruf al-Mudhakkir, who said:

I was with Saʿid ibn Jubayr while he was circumambulating the House when a man passed by. I asked, “Do you know who this is?” He replied, “No.” I said, “This is the one who recites:

Humayd—whose home now lies deserted and bare,
Comrade of wine, bald, with silvery hair.
Old age o’ertook him still raising the cup;
He was a noble soul—he would not give it up.

Saʿid smiled and said:

Old age o’ertook him still raising the cup;
He was a wretched soul—he would not give it up.”
