3 – Abu Bakr narrated to us; ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Yunus and Ishaq ibn Isma‘il related, saying: Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah narrated to us, from ‘Amr ibn Dinar, from Yahya ibn Ja‘dah, who said:
‘Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “Beware of wine, for it is the key to every evil. A man was once confronted and told, ‘Either burn this scripture, or kill this child, or prostrate before this cross, or commit fornication with this woman, or drink this cup (of wine).’ He thought nothing would be easier than drinking the cup, so he drank it—and then went on to fornicate with the woman, kill the child, burn the scripture, and prostrate before the cross. Thus, it is the key to every evil.”

٣ - حدثنا أبو بكر، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ يُونُسَ، وَإِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ جَعْدَةَ، قَالَ: قَالَ عُثْمَانُ: إِيَّاكُمْ وَالْخَمْرَ فَإِنَّهَا مِفْتَاحُ كُلِّ شَرٍّ أُتِيَ رَجُلٌ فَقِيلَ لَهُ: إِمَّا أَنْ تُحْرِقَ هَذَا الْكِتَابَ وَإِمَّا أَنْ تَقْتُلَ هَذَا الصَّبِيَّ وَإِمَّا أَنْ تَسْجُدَ لِهَذَا الصَّلِيبِ وَإِمَّا أَنْ تَفْجُرَ بِهَذِهِ الْمَرْأَةِ وَإِمَّا أَنْ تَشْرَبَ هَذِهِ الْكَأْسَ فَلَمْ يَرَ شَيْئًا أَهْوَنَ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ شُرْبِ الْكَأْسِ فَشَرِبَ الْكَأْسَ فَفَجَرَ بِالْمَرْأَةِ وَقَتَلَ الصَّبِيَّ وَحَرَقَ الْكِتَابَ وَسَجَدَ لِلصَّلِيبِ فَهِيَ مِفْتَاحُ كُلِّ شَرٍّ
