38 – Abu Bakr narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Salih al-Azdi narrated to us; he said: Hashim ibn al-Qasim narrated to us, from Fudayl ibn ʿIyad, from Layth, from Mujahid, who said:

Iblis declared, “Whatever else the children of Adam may thwart me in, they will never thwart me in three matters: When one of them becomes drunk, we seize him by the nose-ring and lead him wherever we please, and he works for us in whatever we desire. When he is angry, he speaks without knowledge and acts in ways he will regret. And we render him stingy with what is in his hand while filling him with hopes for what is beyond his reach.”
