Ahmad informed us, and Abu Bakr narrated to us:
36 – Muhammad ibn ‘Uthman al-‘Ijli narrated to me; he said: Ja‘far ibn ‘Awn narrated to us; Abu Ḥayyan said: We were informed on the authority of al-Sha‘bi, from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Umar, who said:
‘Umar rose to the pulpit of Madinah and proclaimed, “Wine was declared unlawful on the very day its prohibition was revealed, and it may be produced from five sources: grapes, honey, dates, wheat, and barley. Wine is, therefore, anything that clouds the mind.”
