Ahmad informed us:
23 – Abu Bakr narrated to us; ʿAmr ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; he said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Idrīs narrated to us, from al-Mukhtār ibn Fulful, from Anas, who said:
“I asked him about the containers that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had forbidden. He replied, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade vessels coated with pitch.’ I asked, ‘And what are pitch-coated vessels?’ He said, ‘The ones smeared with tar.’ Then he added, ‘Every intoxicant is unlawful.’
I asked, ‘What about vessels made of lead or glass?’ He said, ‘There is no harm in them ⦗62⦘.’
I said, ‘Yet some people dislike them.’ He answered, ‘Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt, for every intoxicant is unlawful.’
I said, ‘You have spoken the truth; intoxicants are unlawful. I only drink a mouthful or two after my meal.’ He replied, ‘Whatever intoxicates in large quantities, even a small amount of it is unlawful. Wine may be produced from grapes, dates, honey, wheat, barley, or corn—whatever you ferment from any of these is wine.’”
