Shaykh Abū al-Ḥusayn ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Bishrān informed us; the report was read to him on Friday, 28 Dhu al-Qaʿda 411 AH. He said: Abū al-Ḥusayn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar al-Jawzī read it to us and confirmed it. He said: Abū Bakr ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Abī al-Dunyā narrated to us, saying:
1 – Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Baziʿ al-Baṣrī related to me; he said: al-Fuḍayl ibn Sulaymān al-Numayrī related to us; he said: ʿUmar ibn Saʿīd related to us from al-Zuhrī, who said ⦗50⦘: Abū Bakr ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥārith informed me, from his father ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, who said: I heard ʿUthmān, may Allah be pleased with him, delivering a sermon in which he said: I heard the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—say:
“Avoid the Mother of All Vices. There was a man among those who lived before you who devoted himself to worship and kept apart from people. A wanton woman became infatuated with him, so she sent her maidservant to him, saying, ‘We invite you to bear witness.’ When he entered, she locked every door behind him until he reached a beautiful woman who had with her a boy and a large bowl filled with wine. She said, ‘We did not summon you to testify; rather, I called you so that you either kill this boy, commit fornication with me, or drink a cup of this wine. If you refuse, I will scream and disgrace you.’ Seeing that he had no way out, he said, ‘Give me a cup of this wine.’ She gave him a cup, and he said, ‘Give me more.’ He did not stop until he had lain with her and killed the boy.
“So shun wine, for by Allah, faith and habitual drinking of wine can never coexist in a man’s heart; one of them will surely expel the other.”
