82 – Abū Bakr al-Bāhilī Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAbbās narrated to us; Marḥūm ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-ʿAṭṭār narrated to us; Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us, from Saʿd ibn Isḥāq ibn Kaʿb ibn ʿUjrah, from his father, from his grandfather, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked his Companions, “What do you say about a man who is killed in the path of Allah?” They answered, “Paradise.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Paradise, if Allah wills.”
He then asked, “What do you say about a man who dies in the path of Allah?” They replied, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said, “Paradise, if Allah wills.”
He continued, “What do you say about a man who has died, and two upright men stand up and declare, ‘We know nothing about him except good’?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Paradise, if Allah wills.”
He then asked, “And what do you say about a man who has died, and two upright men stand up and say, ‘We do not know any good about him’?” They said, “The Fire.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remarked, “A servant who has sinned, and a Lord Who is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
