Husn al-Zann bi-llahIbn Abi al-Dunya

69 – My father narrated to us; Ismaʿil narrated to us; Yunus ibn ʿUbayd informed us, from Muhammad ibn Sirin, who said:

ʿAli (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, “Which verse in the Quran is the most all-embracing?” They began citing various verses, such as: “Whoever commits evil or wrongs himself, then seeks Allah’s forgiveness, will find Allah Forgiving, Merciful” [al-Nisaʾ 110] and others like it.

ʿAli said, “There is no verse in the Quran more all-encompassing than: ‘Say, O My servants who have transgressed against their own souls, do not despair of Allah’s mercy. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins; He alone is the All-Forgiving, the Ever-Merciful.’ ” [al-Zumar 53]
