68 – My father narrated to me. He said: Ismaʿil ibn Ibrahim narrated to us; Abu Makhzum narrated to me; ʿUmar ibn al-Walid narrated to me, saying:
ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz came out on a Friday while his body had grown gaunt. He delivered the sermon as he normally did and then said, “People! Whoever among you has done well, let him praise Allah; and whoever has done wrong, let him seek Allah’s forgiveness. If he falls back, let him seek Allah’s forgiveness again; and if he falls back yet again, let him seek Allah’s forgiveness once more. For there are certain people who are bound to commit deeds that Allah has fastened upon their necks and inscribed against them.”
