62 – Al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Jarawī narrated to me; he in turn reported from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb, who said: ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith informed me that Bakr ibn Sawādah related to him from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Jubayr, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ:
The Prophet ﷺ recited the words of Abraham (peace be upon him): “My Lord, they have indeed led many people astray. So whoever follows me is truly of me, and whoever disobeys me—surely You are Most Forgiving, Most Merciful” (Ibrāhīm 14:36); and the words of Jesus (peace be upon him): “If You punish them, they are Your servants; but if You forgive them, then indeed You alone are the Almighty, the All-Wise” (al-Māʾidah 5:118). He then raised his hands, wept, and said, “O Allah, my community, my community!” and he wept again.
Allah, exalted is He, said, “O Gabriel, go to Muhammad—though your Lord knows best—and ask him: What makes you weep?”
Gabriel came to him and asked. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed him of what he had said, while He—glorified be He—knew best. Allah then said, “O Gabriel, go to Muhammad and tell him: ‘We shall surely please you concerning your community, and We shall never grieve you.’”
