42 – Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn narrated to me; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Qurashī narrated to us; ʿAmr ibn al-Zubayr said:

“Salamah ibn ʿAbbād ibn Manṣūr passed away, so we gathered at his father’s house. The father mourned him with intense grief. His companions said, ‘Abū Salamah, a man like you ought not to let such anguish show.’ He replied, ‘By Allah, I am not weeping over his companionship or our parting; rather, he died in a condition in which I had wished him ⦗47⦘ to die in a better state.’

When he placed him in the grave he said, ‘By Allah, my son, you have now gone to the Most Merciful of the merciful.’

The next morning, as we gathered with him again, a man said, ‘Abū Salamah, last night I saw Salamah in a dream. I asked him, “What happened to you?” He replied, “I have been forgiven.” I asked, “For what?” He said, “One day I passed by the mu’adhdhin (caller to prayer) of the family of so-and-so while he was bearing witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, so I joined him in that testimony.”’

It was as though that vision eased his sorrow.”
