Husn al-Zann bi-llahIbn Abi al-Dunya

144 – ʿUbayd Allah ibn Jarir narrated to us; Muslim ibn Ibrahim narrated to us; Nuh ibn Qays narrated to us, from Ashʿath ibn Jabir al-Huddani, from Makḥul, from ʿAmr ibn ʿAbasah:

An elderly man came to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—leaning on a staff. He said, “O Prophet of Allah, I have committed acts of treachery and blatant sin. Will I be forgiven?”

The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—asked, “Do you bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah?”

He replied, “Yes, O Prophet of Allah.”

The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, “Then Allah has forgiven your treacheries and your sins.”

The man departed exclaiming, “Allah is greater! Allah is greater!”
