Mahmūd al-Warrāq also recited to me:
[Metre: al-Baḥr al-Kāmil]
I go on drowning, ever constant in my wrongdoing,
yet You still overtake me with pardon and forgiveness.
You did not curtail Your bounty when I offended; You increased it instead,
until my very offence seemed almost a benefaction.
You drape beauty over ugliness—as though
what delights You in me were lies and calumny.
It is as if, by sinning, I were seeking Your good pleasure,
for my disobedience has brought me no harm in Your sight.
