134 – Muhammad ibn ʿUbayd Allah al-Madani narrated to us; Muʿtamir ibn Sulayman narrated to us; from one of his teachers, who said: Mutarrif ibn ʿAbd Allah said, “If a finely calibrated scale were produced and the believer’s fear and his hope were weighed upon it, the two would balance exactly. When Allah’s mercy is recalled, he is filled with hope; and when Allah’s punishment is recalled, he is overtaken by fear.”
