133 – ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar ibn Muhammad narrated to us; Husayn ibn ʿAli al-Juʿfi narrated to us; from Sufyan ibn ʿUyaynah; from Dawud ibn Shabur.
Luqman said to his son, “My dear child, fear Allah with a fear that stands between you and careless hope, and hope in Him with a hope that stands between you and paralysing fear.”
The son replied, “Father, I have but one heart. If I burden it with fear, it has no room left for hope, and if I burden it with hope, it has no room left for fear.”
Luqman answered, “My son, the believer possesses a heart as though it were two hearts: with one he hopes in Allah, and with the other he fears Him.”
