121 – Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn narrated to me; Yaḥyā ibn Rāshid narrated to us, from Maṭar Abū Saʿīd, from ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Zayd (may Allah have mercy on him), who said:
“I asked Ziyād al-Numayrī, ‘What is the ultimate degree of fear?’ He replied, ‘To revere Allah so profoundly that one would never occupy the station of disgraceful deeds.’
I then asked, ‘And what is the ultimate degree of hope?’ He answered, ‘To place one’s expectation in Allah in every circumstance.’”
