118 – Abū Mūsā Hārūn ibn Sufyān narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Bakr al-Sahmī narrated to me; ʿAbbād ibn Shaybah al-Ḥabaṭī narrated to us; from Saʿīd ibn Anas; from Anas, who said:

“While the Prophet ﷺ was sitting, we suddenly saw him laugh so broadly that his front teeth became visible. ʿUmar asked, ‘What has made you laugh, O Messenger of Allah? May my father and mother be sacrificed for you.’ The Prophet replied:

‘Two men from my community will kneel before the Lord of Glory. One of them will say, “My Lord, exact the wrong that was done to me by my brother.” Allah will say, “Give your brother what you owe him.” He will answer, “My Lord, I have no good deeds left.” The first will then say, “My Lord, let him carry some of my sins.”’

At that, the Prophet’s eyes overflowed with tears, and he said, ‘That will indeed be a tremendous Day—a Day when people will desperately need to have some of their burdens removed from them.’

He continued, ‘Then Allah will say to the claimant, “Raise your head and look at the gardens.” He will raise his head and say, “My Lord, I see cities of silver and palaces of gold ornamented with pearls. For which prophet is this? For which truthful one? For which martyr is this?” Allah will say, “It is for whoever pays the price.” He will ask, “My Lord, who can afford that?” Allah will say, “You can.” He will ask, “With what, my Lord?” Allah will answer, “By your forgiving your brother.” He will then say, “My Lord, I have forgiven him.” Allah will say, “Take your brother by the hand and enter Paradise.”’

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ concluded, ‘So be mindful of Allah and set things right between yourselves, for Allah will reconcile the believers on the Day of Resurrection.’
