115 – ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd narrated to me, from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Salamah al-Mājishūn, from Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir, who said:

“ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz (may Allah be pleased with him) detested al-Ḥajjāj, yet he found solace in a sentence the latter uttered on his death-bed: ‘O Allah, forgive me, for they claim that You will not.’”

Abu Bakr said: “Someone other than ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd also related to me that this report reached al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī. He asked, ‘Did he really say it?’ They replied, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Perhaps…’”
