103 – Azhar ibn Marwān al-Raqāshī narrated to us; Shamlah ibn Hazzāl Abū al-Hatrūsh al-Bakhtarī narrated to us, who said: “I heard al-Ḥasan—may Allah have mercy on him—at a funeral in which al-Farazdaq was present while the people were standing in a circle around the grave, reminding one another of death. Al-Ḥasan said, ‘Abū Firās, what have you prepared for this?’ He replied, ‘For eighty years I have upheld the testimony that there is no god but Allah.’ Al-Ḥasan said, ‘Stand firm upon it and rejoice,’ or words to that effect.” In a version other than Azhar’s, it continues: Al-Ḥasan said, “What an excellent provision! What an excellent provision!”
