87 – Dawud ibn ‘Amr narrated to us; Isma‘il ibn ‘Ayyash informed us, from a shaykh among the people of Basra, from al-Hasan, who said:
“Jesus son of Mary, peace be upon him, once passed with his companions by a foul stench. The group covered their noses with their hands, but Jesus did not. Later they passed by a delightful fragrance, whereupon the companions uncovered their noses while Jesus placed his hand over his own. When he was asked about this, he replied: ‘A pleasant fragrance is a blessing, and I feared I might not discharge the gratitude it deserves; whereas a foul odor is a trial, and I preferred to endure the trial with patience.’”
