Al-Wara'Ibn Abi al-Dunya

84 – Suwayd ibn Saʿīd narrated to me; he said: al-Ḥakam ibn Sinān narrated to us, from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, who said:

A man from the people of Medina had a sister who lived in one of the city’s open courtyards. She died, so he went to the marketplace to buy what was needed for her burial. There he met a man carrying a pouch filled with dinars, and he put it in the fold of his own garment. After he had buried her and returned home, he remembered the pouch that was still in the grave. He sought the help of a friend, and the two of them dug the grave up again and found the pouch. The man then said to his companion, “Step back until …—my sister is before the men.” He lifted the covering from the niche, and behold, the grave was blazing with fire. He replaced the covering, called his companion, and together they leveled the grave.

He then went back to his mother and said, “Tell me, what was my sister’s state?” She replied, “Why do you ask about her? The secret has died.” He said, “Tell me.” She said, “Your sister used to postpone the prayer and would not pray with the prescribed ablution. And when the neighbors fell asleep, she would place her ear against their doors and then spread whatever conversation she had overheard.”
