Al-Wara'Ibn Abi al-Dunya

Ahmad ibn Ibrahim ibn Kathir narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Isa narrated to us; Mukhallad—meaning the son of Husayn—narrated to us, from Hisham, who said:

“We were sitting together, and Yunus ibn Ubayd was with us. We brought up a matter and began to discuss which deeds are the most demanding, and they all agreed upon scrupulous piety (waraʿ). Then Hassan ibn Abi Sinan arrived. They said, ‘Abu Abd Allah has come.’ So he sat down and they informed him of what had been said. Hassan replied, ‘The prayer involves effort, fasting involves effort, and giving charity involves effort. But what is waraʿ except that when something causes you misgivings, you simply leave it?’”}။
