Surayj ibn Yunus narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Humayd narrated to us, from Sufyan, who said that al-Hasan declared, “I encountered people who were urged toward what is lawful and who applied themselves to it with great effort, yet they would still leave it, saying, ‘We fear it may corrupt us,’ and they persisted in this struggle until they died from sheer exertion.”
