Muhammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan narrated to us, from Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ashʿath, who said:
“I asked Fudayl ibn ʿIyāḍ, ‘Which deeds are the most virtuous?’ He answered, ‘Those without which one cannot manage.’ I said, ‘Performing the obligatory duties and avoiding what is forbidden.’ He replied, ‘Yes; you have answered well, O Bukhārī. That is waraʿ (scrupulous piety).’”
