230 – al-Muthannā narrated to us; he said: Bishr transmitted, from Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ, from Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn, who said: ʿUmar wrote to Abū Mūsā, “When this letter reaches you, distribute the people’s stipends and send to me whatever remains with Ziyād.” He did so. Later, during the caliphate of ʿUthmān, ʿUthmān wrote to Abū Mūsā with the same instruction, and he complied. Ziyād came with the surplus, set it down before ʿUthmān, and one of ʿUthmān’s sons came, picked up something … and walked off with it. Ziyād burst into tears. ʿUthmān asked him, “What makes you weep?” He replied, “I once brought the Commander of the Believers ʿUmar the very same amount I have brought you. One of his sons came and took a single dirham; he ordered that it be snatched from him until the boy cried. Your son has now come and taken this, yet I have not seen anyone say a word to him.” ʿUthmān said, “ʿUmar used to withhold from his household and relatives, seeking the Face of Allah, whereas I give to my household and relatives, seeking the Face of Allah. You will never meet the like of ʿUmar—never will you meet the like of ʿUmar, never will you meet the like of ʿUmar.”
