229 – al-Muthanna ibn Muʿādh ibn Muʿādh narrated to us; Bashr ibn al-Mufaḍḍal transmitted; Ibn Abī ʿArūbah narrated from Qatādah, who said: Muʿayqib was in charge of ʿUmar’s Bayt al-Māl (public treasury). One day he swept the treasury and found a single dirham, which he handed to one of ʿUmar’s sons. Muʿayqib said: I then returned home, when suddenly ʿUmar’s messenger came to summon me. I went, and there was the dirham in ʿUmar’s hand. He said to me, “Woe to you, Muʿayqib! Have you felt any grievance against me?” I replied, “Over what, O Commander of the Believers?” He said, “Did you want the community of Muhammad—peace and blessings be upon him—to bring me to court over this one dirham?”
