222 – Aḥmad ibn Ibrāhīm related to us; he said: ʿAlī ibn Isḥāq told us; he said: ʿAbdullāh told us; he said: Jarīr ibn Ḥāzim—on the authority of a man—from Fāṭimah bint ʿAbd al-Malik, who said:
One day ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz expressed a desire for some honey, but we had none. So we dispatched a man, mounted on one of the state postal horses, to Baalbek, and he brought back honey.
Later we said to him, “You once mentioned honey, and we now have some. Would you like it?” He replied, “Yes.” We served it to him and he drank, then he asked, “Where did you get this honey?”
I answered, “We sent a man on one of the postal mounts with two dinars to Baalbek, and he bought it for us.”
She continued: He sent for the man, and when he arrived he said, “Take this honey to the market and sell it. Return to us our capital, and whatever profit remains, put it toward the fodder for the postal horses. If it would benefit the Muslims for me to vomit, I would have done so.”
