221 – Aḥmad ibn Ibrāhīm related to us; he said: al-ʿAlāʾ ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār told us; he said: Ḥammād ibn Salamah told us; he said: Abū Sinān reported that ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz would have water heated for him in his kitchen. He asked the kitchen attendant, “Where is this water being heated?” The man replied, “In the kitchen.” ʿUmar said, “Find out how long you have been heating it there and let me know.” The man answered, “For such-and-such a period.” ʿUmar then said, “Determine the price of the firewood that was used.” He replied, “Such-and-such an amount.” So ʿUmar took that amount and deposited it in the public treasury.
