220 – Aḥmad ibn Ibrāhīm related to us; he said: Ismāʿīl ibn Ibrāhīm told us; he said: Rajāʾ ibn Abī Salamah narrated:
It reached me that ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz would have a meal prepared for those who attended him, yet he himself would not partake of it, and so they too would refrain. He asked, “Why are they not eating?” They replied, “Because you do not eat, so they do not eat.” He said, “What is a single day that costs no more than two dirhams from his own personal wealth, spent on the kitchen?” Then he ate, and they ate.
