Al-Wara'Ibn Abi al-Dunya

218 – Muhammad ibn al-Husayn related to me; he said: Ibrahim ibn Dawud ibn Shaddad recited to me his verses:

A man’s covetousness debases his reason,
And Time—destiny itself—harbours countless tricks.
People are brothers to whoever owns what they seek;
Ruined is the servant who stretches out to them in need.
If a man is intelligent and God-fearing,
His scrupulous piety will silence him about their faults,
Just as the sick person, absorbed by his own pain,
Has no thought for the pain of all the rest.
