Al-Wara'Ibn Abi al-Dunya
  1. Abū Bakr al-Tamīmī narrated to me; he said: Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf informed us: Ibrāhīm ibn Adham used to glean fallen grain with the needy. One day he noticed an ear of wheat and hurried toward it together with the poor, outpacing them. They reproached him for that, so he threw away everything he had gathered and said, “I have never jostled with the people of the world for their worldly goods—shall I now jostle with the poor for their livelihood?” From then on, he would only glean alongside the animals.
