- Ishaq ibn Ismaʿil narrated to us; he said: Abu Muʿawiyah narrated to us, from Hisham ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from ʿAsim ibn ʿUmar, from ʿUmar, who said: “I do not consider it lawful for me to eat from this public treasury of yours except what I used to eat from my own private wealth: bread with oil, or bread with clarified butter.”
He continued: “At times a large dish would be brought that had been prepared with oil, while the portion nearest to him contained clarified butter. He would excuse himself to the people, saying, ‘I am an Arab man and I cannot easily stomach oil.’”
