- Abu Bilal al-Ashʿari narrated to us; he said: Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Madhhiji narrated to us, from Jarir ibn Hazim, from al-Hasan, who said:
ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab was walking one day with a group of his companions when they noticed a frail little girl in the marketplace; the wind kept knocking her forward because of her weakness. ʿUmar exclaimed, “Poor child! Who knows this girl?” ʿAbd Allah said to him, “Do you not recognize her? She is one of your own daughters.” ʿUmar asked, “Which of my daughters is she?” He replied, “She is the daughter of ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar.” ʿUmar then said, “What has brought her to the destitution I am seeing?” He answered, “Your holding back what you have.” ʿUmar retorted, “Does my refraining from spending on her keep you from seeking for your daughters what other people seek? By Allah, you have no claim with me except your allotted share alongside the rest of the Muslims—whether it suffices you or not. Between me and you all stands the Book of Allah.”
