- Abu Khaythama and Ishaq ibn Ismaʿil narrated to us; they said: Jarir narrated to us, from Hisham ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from ʿAsim ibn ʿUmar, who said:
ʿUmar sent for me at dawn—at the time of the morning prayer—so I went to him and found him sitting in the mosque. He praised Allah and extolled Him, and then said:
“To proceed: before I was entrusted with this public wealth, I never regarded any part of it as lawful for myself except when taken with due right—and what was utterly forbidden to me on the very day I assumed office has remained so, safeguarded by my trust. I have provided for you from Allah’s treasury for one full month, and I will not add anything beyond that. Last year I also gave you the produce of my orchard in al-ʿAliyah; sell it and take its price. Then go to one of the merchants of your people, stay beside him, and whenever he buys something, join him as a partner. Spend what you earn on yourself and your family.”
He said: So I went and did exactly that.
