175 – Abu ʿAbd Allah al-ʿIjli, Husayn ibn ʿAli, narrated to us; he said: Abu Usamah narrated to us; he said: Yazid ibn Sinan narrated to us, from an informant, who said: ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab asked the companions seated around him, “With what deed shall we be able to face Allah on the Day of Resurrection?”

Some of the group replied, “With the prayer.” ʿUmar said, “Both the upright and the corrupt may pray.”

They said, “With fasting.” He said, “Both the upright and the corrupt may fast.”

They said, “With charity.” He said, “Both the upright and the corrupt may give charity.”

They said, “With the pilgrimage.” He said, “Both the upright and the corrupt may perform the pilgrimage.”

Then ʿUmar declared, “What will truly enable us to stand honorably before Allah is to fulfil what He has made obligatory upon us, to refrain from what He has forbidden, and to carry a sincere intention for all that rests with Allah.”
