- Ahmad ibn Ishaq al-Ahwazi narrated to us; he said: Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Muqri’ narrated to us; he said: Abu al-Aswad Humayd narrated to me, from Ibn ‘Awn, that Ibn ‘Awn once said to a man, “I intend to treat you well.” Later a shipment of goods arrived for him from another place, so he summoned the man and said, “Load onto it—item by item—whatever you wish.” The man did so. Ibn ‘Awn then asked him, “If I hand it over to you for the price you have just set, do you think I have done good?” He replied, “Yes.” Ibn ‘Awn said, “Then it is yours.” He then added, “I do not know whether I have truly reached the level of ihsan (excellence) or not.”
