161 – al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to us, from Shibl ibn Wāziʿ, who said: I heard Shuʿayb ibn Ḥarb say:
“Two men were travelling with me on a boat. One of them picked up a single grain of wheat and put it in his mouth. His companion cried, ‘Stop! What have you done?’ He replied, ‘I acted out of heedlessness.’ The other retorted, ‘I would rather be eaten by wild beasts than accompany a man who becomes heedless of Allah.’ Then he called out, ‘Sailor, bring us ashore!’ and he disembarked.
Shuʿayb went on: We heard the roar of a lion coming from the thicket, and we never learned what became of the man. His companion then turned to me and said, ‘That man has been my companion for forty—indeed, a little over forty—years, and never before did he see me make a single slip.’”
