Al-Wara'Ibn Abi al-Dunya

156 – Ahmad ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, saying: Muʿammal ibn Ismaʿil informed us; he said: ʿUmara ibn Zadhan related to me: Kahmas Abu ʿAbd Allah said to me, “O Abu Salama, I once committed a sin over which I have been weeping for forty years.” I asked, “What was it, Abu ʿAbd Allah?” He replied, “A brother of mine came to visit me, so I bought him a grilled fish for one daniq (a small coin). When he had finished eating, I went to a wall belonging to a neighbor of mine—built of mud-bricks—and broke off a small piece so that he could wash his hand with it. I have been weeping over that ever since, for forty years.”
