Al-Wara'Ibn Abi al-Dunya

149 – Abu Sahl al-Faḍl ibn Jaʿfar narrated to me; he said: Yaḥyā ibn ʿAmīrah al-Baṣrī informed us; he said: Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl informed us, from [a narrator] who said:

“While Jesus, son of Mary—peace be upon him—was roaming along the foot of a mountain, he noticed a mouse entering its hole. He said, ‘Everything has a refuge, yet the son of Mary has none.’

Allah then revealed to him: ‘O Jesus, climb the mountain so that he may be told of his sin.’

He climbed the mountain and there he came upon a man who looked like a worn-out waterskin. Jesus asked him, ‘Servant of Allah, how long have you been on this mountain?’ He replied, ‘For fifty years; I have taken no shade from heat, cold, or rain.’

Jesus said, ‘Servant of Allah, what momentous offense of yours has brought you to this condition?’ He answered, ‘I once asserted that something which truly existed had never been; by doing so I trespassed into the knowledge of Allah, and I fear that He may punish me.’”
