147 – Azhar ibn Marwān al-Raqāshī narrated to us; he said: Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān narrated to us; he said: Abū ʿImrān al-Jawnī narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rabāḥ al-Anṣārī, from Kaʿb, who said:
“Three devoted worshippers from the Children of Israel once gathered together and said, ‘Come, let each of us mention the gravest sin he has ever committed.’
One of them said, ‘As for me, I can recall no sin weightier than the time I was travelling with a companion. A tree blocked our path, so I sprang out in front of him; he was startled by me and cried, “Allah is judge between you and me!”’
Another said, ‘I had a mother who once called me from the quarter whence the north wind blows. I answered her, but she did not hear me. She then approached in anger and began pelting me with stones. I took a stick and came to sit before her so she might strike me with it until her anger subsided. She was alarmed by my approach, and a stone struck her face and split it open. That is the greatest sin I have ever committed.’"
