132 – Hārūn ibn ʿUmar al-Qurashī narrated to us, saying: Asad ibn Mūsā related to us; Ibn Luhayʿah told us; Ibn Hubayrah reported, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ghanm al-Ashʿarī, that he went to see ʿUmar and stayed with him.
ʿUmar owned a she-camel whose milk he used to drink. One day his servant came and offered him some milk. ʿUmar found its taste unfamiliar and said, “Woe to you! Where did this milk come from?” The servant replied, “O Commander of the Believers, the she-camel’s calf managed to drink her milk, so I milked another she-camel from the Muslims’ treasury for you.”
ʿUmar exclaimed, “Woe to you! You have made me drink fire. Call ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib for me.” When ʿAlī arrived, ʿUmar said, “This man has taken a she-camel that belongs to the public treasury and given me its milk. Is that lawful for me?”
ʿAlī replied, “Yes, O Commander of the Believers, it is lawful for you—and its meat as well. Yet the time is near when people will appear who will deny us any share in this wealth.”
