Al-Wara'Ibn Abi al-Dunya

130 – Abu ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to us: Abu Usāmah related to us, from al-Ḥasan ibn al-Ḥakam. He said: My mother told me, on the authority of Umm ʿUthmān, that a bondwoman who belonged to ʿAlī said:

I once came to ʿAlī, and set before him was a heap of cloves. I said, “Commander of the Believers, would you give my daughter a necklace made from these cloves?” He answered, “Put a dirham here in my hand”—and he gestured with his hand—“for this is the property of the Muslims. Otherwise, wait until my own share arrives, and I will give you something from it.” He refused to give me anything from it.
