122 – Ahmad ibn Ibrahim told us: Abu ʿAbd Allah al-Marwazi narrated to us, saying, “I heard ʿAli ibn Abi Bakr al-Asfadhani relate:
Wuhayb ibn al-Ward once craved some milk, so his maternal aunt brought him a bowl drawn from a ewe owned by the household of ʿIsa ibn Musa. He questioned her about its source; when she informed him, he refused to drink it. She urged, ‘Drink,’ but he still declined. She pressed him again, saying, ‘I hope that if you drink it Allah will forgive you’—meaning, by my desire being satisfied. He replied, ‘I would not like to have drunk it, even if Allah were to forgive me.’ She asked, ‘Why not?’ He said, ‘Because I dislike attaining His forgiveness through disobedience to Him.’”
