Al-Wara'Ibn Abi al-Dunya

120 – Muhammad ibn ʿAbbad ibn Musa told me: Ismaʿil al-Arqat narrated to us, from a man who said, “I accompanied Sufyan al-Thawri on the journey to Mecca. We passed by a man at one of the manʿashiyān (a roadside shelter) on a day of searing heat; he had a ḥubbāb (large clay water-jug) from which he was giving people water. We sat in his shade and drank some of his water. Sufyan then asked him about his circumstances, and the man replied, ‘These people give me a stipend for doing this.’ At that, Sufyan stood up, moved away, and vomited until it seemed his very soul would leave him. Then he sat in the full glare of the sun and refused to take any shade.”

He continued, “So we said to the camel driver, ‘Set off, or the shaykh will die!’ and we resumed the journey.”
