116 – Haytham ibn Kharijah narrated to us: Muʿāfā ibn ʿImrān narrated to us, from Abū Bakr ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Abī Maryam, from Ḍamrah ibn Ḥabīb, from Umm ʿAbd Allah—the sister of Shaddād ibn Aws—who said:
She once sent the Prophet ﷺ a cup of milk for him to break his fast with, on a long, sweltering day. He returned her messenger with the question, “Where did you get this milk?” She replied, “From a sheep of mine.” He then sent her messenger back a second time, asking, “And where did you get that sheep?” I answered, “I bought it with my own money.” Only then did he drink it.
The next morning Umm ʿAbd Allah came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I sent you that milk out of compassion for you, because of the long day and the intense heat, yet you kept sending your messenger back to me.” The Prophet ﷺ replied, “That is what the messengers before me were commanded: not to eat except what is wholesome, and not to do anything except what is righteous.”
