One of them said, “As for me, I have no desire to compete with these two companions of mine; I believe my safety lies in keeping clear of this affair altogether.”

The ascetic replied, “I do not imagine your two companions would resent your withdrawal if, by leaving you aside, I were to nominate one of them.”

The man answered, “Select for your people whomever you see fit.”

The ascetic responded, “It seems to me you have just gone back on your word, and so the three of you now stand before me on equal footing. Nevertheless, I shall counsel you and set forth for you the parables of this world and of men like yourselves within it. You know your own circumstances best, and the choice ultimately rests with you.”
