1 – Abu al-Harith Surayj ibn Yunus narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Humayd narrated to us; from Sufyan al-Thawri, who said: Muslim ibn Yasar declared, “Whoever hopes for something pursues it, and whoever fears something flees from it. I cannot see the worth of a man’s hope if, when a trial befalls him, he shows no patience for the sake of what he hopes to attain; nor can I see the value of a man’s fear if, when a temptation confronts him, he does not relinquish it for the sake of what he dreads.”
